The problem

Reviews stopped
being reviews.

Most reviews don't fail because people lie. They fail because incentives distort the truth.

Sponsored posts, affiliate payments, and automated accounts turned product discovery into a guessing game. When money, promotions, or algorithms decide what gets seen, honest sentiment gets buried beneath noise.

Sift listens where people are least filtered. Not polished reviews. Not sponsored opinions. Real conversations, where frustration, praise, and nuance still exist.

The app

This is what
you actually get.

Every screen below is Sift running on iPhone. The scores are real results the app produced for those products.

01

A score out of 100, with the reasoning underneath

One number tells you where a product stands. Below it, each category is scored on its own, so you can see exactly where it wins and where it slips. Every point is tied to something people actually reported.

Bio&Me Super Seedy & Nutty Porridge Pot 91 Excellent

Product screen in Sift showing a Sift Core Index of 91 marked excellent, with ingredient quality scored 90 and nutritional balance scored 95, each supported by quoted findings.
02

Problems named, not averaged away

A poor product gets a poor score, and Sift says why. Concerns appear as specific findings drawn from what people reported, ranked by severity, rather than disappearing into a comfortable average.

Johnson's Baby Powder 35 Poor

Sift showing Johnson's Baby Powder with a Sift Core Index of 35 marked inferior, ingredient safety and transparency scored 33, and red flag findings listed underneath.
03

Something better, in the same aisle

When a product falls short, Sift shows higher scoring alternatives in the same category, with the difference in score next to each one. No affiliate link sits behind any of them.

Replacing a product scored 20 82 and 83 found

Recommendations screen in Sift showing a scanned dog food scored 20 out of 100 alongside two better rated alternatives scoring 82 and 83.
04

What everyone else is scanning

A live view of recent scans across categories, from food to audio to skincare, so you can see how products are actually performing before you reach the shelf. Your own scan history sits alongside it.

Recent scans 97 88 65

Trending screen in Sift listing recent community scans including a chilli jam scored 97, earphones scored 88 and a cereal scored 65.

Process

From scan to score,
in seconds.

Point the camera at a barcode, search by name, or upload an image. Here is what happens next.

01

Collection

Public conversation scan

The engine searches thousands of public discussions across Reddit, YouTube, forums, and review sites, looking for the unfiltered experience that marketing tends to hide.

02

Filtering

Spam and noise removal

Not every comment is real. Sift removes bot spam, promotional affiliate links, and repetitive astroturfing patterns, to isolate genuine human experience.

03

Synthesis

The verdict

What remains is synthesised into a clear verdict. Not a generic 4.5 stars, but the specific issues and highlights pulled out of real usage stories.

Sources

Where the data
comes from.

What Sift reads, what it throws out, and why the difference matters.

What we scan

  • Community discussions

Deep dive threads on Reddit and forums, where people talk about longevity, specific flaws, and what a product was actually like to live with.

  • Video comments

Real user feedback found underneath product review videos on YouTube and other platforms.

  • Niche forums

Specialised enthusiast communities where people with real domain knowledge share detailed, unfiltered opinions.

What we exclude

  • Sponsored content

Posts tagged as advertising, or where commercial promotion patterns are detected.

  • Affiliate blogs

Search optimised sites built for one purpose, which is generating affiliate link clicks.

  • Anything that is not public

Sift analyses strictly public content on the open web. It never touches private messages, protected groups, or personal identifying information.

More detail on data ethics is on the data sources page.

Transparency

How a score
is built.

Sift uses natural language processing to read sentiment. It does not simply count keywords.

91

Sift Core Index

The score for the porridge pot above. Every product is scored from 0 to 100.

Four things go into the number

  • Sentiment Weighted

What people say, and how strongly they say it, across every source that survived filtering.

  • Ingredient quality Weighted

What is in the product, what each ingredient does, and its likely impact with regular use.

  • Value for money Weighted

Whether people felt the product justified its price, in their own words.

  • Reported experiences Weighted

What actually happened when people used it, over weeks and months rather than on day one.

Not every voice counts the same

The algorithm assigns weight based on context, source credibility, and consensus. A detailed, heavily upvoted analysis carries more weight than a short generic comment.

Detailed, highly upvoted analysis Carries most
Considered comment with specifics Carries more
Short, generic comment Carries least
Detected spam or promotion Removed
Close view of a Sift findings list. Two red warnings about talc and asbestos litigation, one amber note about fragrance allergens, and two green findings praising a reformulation to cornstarch and the removal of parabens and sulfates.
Each finding is colour coded by severity and tied to what people reported. Good and bad sit in the same list, on the same product.

Independence

What we will not do.

  • We do not accept payment to alter a rating
  • We do not run ads inside the app
  • We do not take affiliate payments or kickbacks
  • We do not use paid or sponsored reviews
  • We are not a marketplace, and no brand can pay to look better

And where Sift stops

Sift does not claim absolute truth. Sentiment changes. Communities evolve. Some products simply do not have enough meaningful discussion behind them.

When a product is too new or too niche, Sift says it has insufficient data rather than guessing. When confidence is low, it shows that too.

Scores are opinion based and informational. They are a snapshot in time, and they can change as products are reformulated or as new information appears. They are not a factual guarantee or professional advice.
